Retention and Stability of Orthodontic Treatment |

Retention and Stability of Orthodontic Treatment
The orthodontic treatment is not yet finished when the braces are removed from the teeth. After orthodontic treatment, the periodontal structures have to adapt to the new position and altered circumstances. The fact that it takes 4 to 6 months for periodontal structures to adapt to the new situation determines the retention protocol to a large extent. Consequently, active treatment should be followed by 24-hour daily retention for 6-12 months.
Subsequently, the use of removable appliance during the sleep time suffices.
How long retention should be maintained after orthodontic treatment?
It depends on:
1. |
the initial malocclusion, |
2. |
the treatment performed, |
3. |
the functional conditions, |
4. |
the periodontal situation, |
5. |
the anticipated facial growth, and |
6. |
the wishes of the patient. |
Patient should visit Pittsburgh Orthodontic Clinic once every two months with their upper and lower retainers after removing the fixed braces. The purposes are to evaluate any relapse situation of the dentition and/or the intact/integrity of the retainers.
