Functional Appliances

The stomatognathic system consists of the teeth, the periodontal membranes, alveolar and basal bone, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and the motivating and draping neuromusculature. This is a living, viable, and remarkably adaptive system, particularly during the period of growth and development of the craniofacial complex. Form and function were related intimately. Changes in functional stress produced changes in internal bone architecture and external shape. Orthodontist use these principles and different varieties of functional appliances to effectively correct the problems of the bad bites and to enhance the health of the stomatognathic system of the human body.

The following are some different varieties of the functional appliances which could be used by the orthodontist in daily orthodontic practice. Please visit our orthodontist to see whether they are appropriate for your children. Please be noted that the success of the orthodontic treatment relies on the cooperation of the patient to wear the functional appliance consistently!
