Care of Mouth After Extractions

At Pittsburgh Orthodontic Clinic, our doctors are committed to providing your child quality pedontic and orthodontic care. Among our many advanced procedures, tooth extraction is one of the most common, and patents often have questions about aftercare. Below, you will find tips for mouth care following a tooth extraction.

Mouth Care Tips After An Extraction

Use the following guidelines to help your child’s mouth heal properly and avoid unneeded pain.

Do NOT rinse your mouth on the first day – On the second day, rinse gently every 3 to 4 hours, especially after meals, using a one-quarter teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Continue rinsing for several days.

Bleeding –
Following any extraction, some bleeding is to be expected. If persistent or excessive bleeding occurs, place gauze pads over bleeding area and bite down firmly for about one hour. Repeat if necessary.
Swelling –
An ice bag or a cold moist cloth should be applied periodically to the operated area. We may give you more specific instructions on how long and how often to use a cold compress.
Pain –
For mild to moderate pain, use any non-aspirin of medication of your choice following the directions on the bottle/bag.
Food –
A light diet is advisable during the first 24 hours.
Bony Edges –
Occasionally, small sharp bone fragments may work up through the gums during healing. While these are not roots, if they are particularly annoying, you may return to our office for simple removal.

If any other unusual symptoms occur, please call the office (02- 28733272, 02-28736248) immediately to schedule an appointment.
